This elegant Carriage House built as a “private garage”, was completed in 1908 and includes the original architectural drawings stamped by the Bureau of Buildings, Borough of Manhattan dated Aug 23, 1907. The carriage house was purpose-built for the motor car unlike most other carriage houses in NYC that were initially built for horse and carriage. The first Model T Ford rolled off the production line in Detroit in September, 1908, so this carriage house – was built in anticipation of this oncoming transport revolution. This private garage had quarters for a chauffeur and other staff – the second and third floors were stand-alone apartments, each with two bedrooms. We know that in one such apartment lived Olivette Florence Ekin (the “Lady’s Maid” to Henry Sturgis Morgan’s wife, Catherine Frances Lovering Adams (a direct descendant of U.S. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams), and Olivette’s husband John Elkin, was the chauffeur to the H.S.
